THE OPPORTUNITY - EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Executive Director (“ED”) role is a strategic and impactful opportunity to co-lead one of Canada’s most dynamic and respected theatre companies. Theatre Calgary is seeking an inspiring and visionary leader to work in collaboration with Artistic Director, (“AD”), Stafford Arima, to achieve the company’s vision.
Working with the Board of Directors in a dual-reporting structure with the AD, the ED will drive a strategy that grows audiences, deepens community engagement with Theatre Calgary, and develops strong partnerships. Confronting current challenges, the ED will consider new and innovative approaches that attract audiences, subscribers, sponsors and donors.
The ED shares responsibility for the overall strategic management of the organization and is wholly responsible for providing leadership of the administrative, financial, and general operations of the company, including oversight of the Finance, Marketing and Audience Development, Fund Development, Community Engagement, and Administrative departments.
With bold aspirations for the future, together with the AD, the ED will lead Theatre Calgary to new levels of engagement with audiences and increase its impact on the lives of Calgarians.
THE CANDIDATEThis moment calls for an experienced, professional arts executive with the drive to ensure Theatre Calgary’s long-term success.
We are seeking a leader with high standards who will build a culture of excellence and accountability across the organization, with particular responsibility for the non-artistic dimensions of the company.
Our next ED will have:- Passion for theatre and a solid understanding of the business of running a theatre company. They will appreciate the transformational power of live theatre and celebrate the creative spirit.
- Executive leadership with a track record for building high-functioning teams, along with demonstrated competence in all core areas of performing arts administration (development; finance; marketing; human resources; board governance).
- Relationship-building skills to inspire and bring out the best in a team while expanding Theatre Calgary’s connections in community. These skills will also enable the dual-report structure to work productively in service of the organization’s mission.

Theatre Calgary is seeking skilled individual to fulfil the role of Head Stage Carpenter. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing supervision, co-ordination and maintaining a safe stage for the onstage productions and backstage operations at the Max Bell Theatre.The Head Stage Carpenter reports directly to the Production Manager and Technical Director. The successful candidate will have excellent technical and communication skills and will exhibit a keen interest and ability to work as a part of a dynamic team environment. The successful candidate shall be willing to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends according to the production schedule created by management.
Theatre Calgary operates as a certified Union House with IATSE Local 212, is a Category “A” venue with CAEA, and is a signatory to the Canadian Theatre Agreement (CTA). Theatre Calgary is also a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT).
We are the resident company in the Max Bell Theatre in the Arts Commons complex, where we primarily present theatrical plays and musicals that are created and produced in-house. The seasons are typically structured with work spanning from August through June, including a summer maintenance & repair period. Theatre Calgary also occasionally produces works in other venues, and/or in collaboration with other theatres.The Max Bell Theatre has a 55’ wide by 40’ deep proscenium stage, featuring a 51-lineset single purchase counterweight fly system, and capacity for an audience of up to 750 patrons. We are proud to have made significant investments in cutting-edge theatrical equipment and technology, which allows us to create world-class productions. Key assets include an extensive Creative Conners automation rig, Western Canada’s largest permanent LED wall, a ZFX performer flying apparatus, an automated and multi-configurable revolve, a modular trap field, and an automated stage elevator.
